Love is Love Dinner Date

In honor of Valentine’s Day UUSB hosts the Love is Love Dinner Date. At our core, we Unitarian Universalists believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and that includes honoring every form of love people bring to our community. Whether you identify as queer, polyamorous, straight, romantic, platonic, or anywhere in between—or whether you just want to celebrate some self-love—this event if for you!
The goal of the Love is Love Dinner Date is to provide a safe space for folks of all backgrounds to enjoy a nice meal and evening out for Valentine’s Day. It also serves as a major fundraiser for UUSB. Tickets are usually about $25 and include a four course meal.
This event requires a lot of volunteers so we would love your help in making it happen! Here are some of the ways you can get involved:
Before the Event:
- Help us sell tickets – Leading up to the Love is Love Dinner Date we typically have someone tabling in the Great Hall following Sunday Service. This person sells tickets and answers questions about the event.
- Let us borrow your fine china setting for 8 – In honor of this being a Valentine’s Day celebration we like to elevate the experience by setting the tables with fine china (or other nice dishware). We ask for members and friends of our community to bring in their sets the week before the event. Please don’t offer any items that you would be heartbroken if they were damaged.
- Donate Food – We usually have volunteers donate food for appetizers and desserts. Sometimes these are outright donations and sometimes folks ask to be reimbursed for the cost of the food. Either way is fine, you will just want to coordinate with project leadership so we have clear expectations and a good range of options for the event!
- Food & Beverage Purchaser (expenses will be reimbursed) – We typically purchase the main entree and alcohol for this event. The person who obtains these will need to front those expenses and then get the food and beverages on site in coordination with our serving schedule.
Night of Roles
- Live Music – We usually have one musician perform live during the event for lovely background ambience. This is a great opportunity to perform in a low pressure environment!
- Front of House Coordinator – This person is the go to for any questions that come up and helps coordinate volunteers, troubleshoot any problems that come up, and makes the call on when to move on to the next portion of the meal.
- Safety Team – The UUSB Safety Team is a group of folks that work together to offer additional safety support at various events. Because this is a public facing event that serves queer folks, we usually have at least one Safety Team Member on site to facilitate a smooth evening.
- Alcohol Server – This person has to go through a specific State of Indiana training prior to the night of. They are then responsible for pouring wine and beer. They may also be responsible for collecting payment.
- Waiter/Waitress – We have had as many as 6 tables of 8 folks attending this event, so we try to have one watier or waitress per table. These folks assist in clearing the table, making sure the guests have what they need, and bringing out the main entree plated. This is a great role for anyone able bodied and we’ve even had kids from our community assist.
- Plate Food in the Kitchen – The kitchen team is responsible for plating the main entree and salad. This requires coordinating with the wait staff team and is a time sensitive position.
- Cleanup Crew – Depending on the UUSB calendar, we may need to completely reset the space immediately following the event. We need folks who are willing to help wash and pack away the fine china. We may also need to move tables and chairs to meet the needs of the next day’s activities.
Everyone who volunteers Night of gets to eat for free!
