Article 2 Revision Officially Passes

“This is a historic moment for Unitarian Universalism, as we move our living tradition forward to focus on shared values that will help promote liberation, radical inclusion, and communal care both within our church and across society,” said UUA President Rev. Dr. Sofía Betancourt. This quotation is from this UUWorld article.

The vote on the proposed changes to Article II of our UUA bylaws passed – with a tweak to the language about worth and worthiness. It required a two-thirds majority, and received 80% of the votes cast. The full results were 2025 votes for, 499 against, and 21 abstentions. Two proposed amendments, adding “Peace” and “Reason” to the stated values, did not gain enough support to make the final proposal.

All three Actions of Immediate Witness, and one Responsive Resolution, also passed. The AIWs were “Solidarity with Palestinians,” (73.5%), “World on Fire: Humanitarian Work and Climate Change” (95.6%), and “Centering Love Amidst the Ongoing Impact of COVID-19” (86.1%). The Responsive Resolution, “UUA General Assembly Support for October 7 Hostages,” offered in response to the UUA President’s Report, passed with 77%.

Earlier in the GA, we passed the Business Resolution, “Embracing Transgender, Nonbinary, Intersex and Gender Diverse People is a Fundamental Expression of UU Religious Values.”

All told, GA 2024 had 2,757 credentialed delegates from 734 congregations in fifty states; Washington, D.C.; Canada; the U.S. Virgin Islands; Mexico, France, and the Philippines.

Just as a reminder, the passing of the revision to Article 2 for the UUA does not mean that member congregations must also adopt the revision. Each congregation and each individual UU can choose to use the language of the revision or the 7 principles, or any combination of the two to describe their faith tradition.
