This summer, we’re taking one of our favorite annual traditions and expanding the circle.
On Friday, July 11 beginning at 4:00 pm, the Unitarian Universalists of South Bend will host a Regional UU Beach Gathering at Silver Beach in St. Joseph, Michigan. We have invited Unitarian Universalist congregations from across the area to join us for a casual afternoon of conversation, connection, and fun by the water.
At the heart of Unitarian Universalism is a belief that we are deeply connected to one another. Our shared values call us toward interdependence, pluralism, generosity, justice, and love—and those values are not meant to be practiced alone.
Community is one of the places where our values become real.
When we build relationships across congregations, we widen the circle of people we can learn from, celebrate with, collaborate alongside, and support through difficult times. We create opportunities to encounter different perspectives while remaining grounded in shared commitments. We remind ourselves that Unitarian Universalism is larger than any one congregation and that each of our communities is part of a broader, interconnected movement.
That is why this year’s beach gathering feels especially meaningful. By inviting UUs from across the region to join us, we are creating space for new relationships to emerge. A conversation on the sand might become a friendship. A connection between members of different congregations might spark a future collaboration. A family arriving for the first time might discover a wider community where they feel at home.
This gathering also reflects our commitment to radical welcome and inclusion across generations. Friends, family, newcomers, longtime UUs, and people of all ages are welcome. We’ll have floaties for enjoying the water, family-friendly activities, and snacks to share. You are also welcome to bring a favorite snack of your own.
Whether you want to swim, play, relax on the beach, meet UUs from another community, or simply enjoy good conversation by the water, there will be space for you.
Look for the canopy and Unitarian Universalist sign when you arrive.

Our values call us to build communities rooted in love, strengthened by difference, and sustained through relationship. Sometimes that work happens in sanctuaries and meeting rooms.
And sometimes it happens barefoot in the sand.
We hope you’ll join us.
