Jesus’ Radical Love

Although it is usually misunderstood—or outright denied—by some who claim to follow him now, Jesus of Nazareth preached and lived a radical message of love for all persons. That messages resonates, and inspires, and challenges us still. Many thanks to Bill Stevens for suggesting this topic, having purchased the right at last year’s auction.

Charlottesville & South Bend

One year ago, racist groups attacked peaceful demonstrators in Charlottesville, VA. Almost fifty years ago, an unknown arsonist burned our church. How the differences and similarities of these two events may inform our actions into the future.

Hello Again, Everybody!

Not “what I did on my summer Sabbatical” nor even “what I learned…” but “how my Sabbatical is making my life (and, ideally, others’ lives) better.”

Next Year in South Bend

Enigma of Reason

If we humans are so smart, then why do we believe such ridiculous things? With a fairly high brain-size-to-body-mass ratio, why are we still confounded by confirmation bias, etc.? In their book The Enigma of Reason, scientists Mercier and Sperber suggest an answer. We’ll explore the implications for human flourishing.

Life Finds A Way

We’ll celebrate Evolution Weekend by recapping how far we’ve evolved, and forecasting where we might yet be heading.

Malaprops, Melodrama and Medals

Mocked for her multiple marriages, rocked by numerous tragedies, Laura Mae hocked her belongings and socked away an heroic legacy. How might we grok her example in our time?

Abraham, Martin, John & Jen

Celebrating the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the 450th anniversary of the Edict of Torda (a landmark in religious tolerance), we’ll explore how race and religion play into identity.
