American democracy is at a crossroads, as the past few years have reminded us all that democracy’s survival is not guaranteed. Polarization is high, trust is low, and norms are being shattered left and right. Tragically, the specter of political violence looms over the nation. What role does religion play in the current democratic crisis? On the one hand, Christian nationalism receives a lot of attention. But this is hardly the whole story of religion and American democracy. Most Americans are not Christian nationalists and instead embrace religious diversity. Why? Because most Americans experience religious diversity first hand–in their neighborhoods, their extended families, and often their own households. That personal experience with religious diversity leads to an acceptance of religious pluralism, and perhaps even the embrace of democratic norms more broadly.
