Gen XMZ

Gen XMZ is a group that serves folks who are members of Generation X, Millennials, and adult members of Gen Z. The goal of Gen XMZ is to help build community and foster intergenerational connections. We are primarily a social group, but sometimes we do come together for social justice projects, as well as advocating for the future of First Unitarian Church.

This group was started by two Millennial members of the congregation, Dr. Louise and Syd Troyer in Summer 2023. Since that time, the group has grown considerably and we have engaged in a wide variety of activities.

Some of our traditional activities include

  • Attending local events like Fusion Fest, the Michiana Renaissance Festival, and Popicon-a local tabletop gaming convention
  • Enjoying a Friendsgiving Meal Together
  • Writing Holiday Cards to Incarcerated Queer Folks
  • Summer Beach Day

Gen XMZ hosts at least one event each month, and sometimes more depending on the needs of the community. We have a mix of events that are just for the target audience of Gen XMZ, and many that are open to everyone in the congregation. This is an important part of Gen XMZ’s general commitment to foster intergenerational connections including those to the Silent Generation, the Baby Boomers, and Gen Alpha.

In addition to our small groups and events, we also have a Facebook messenger group. This is an informal space where many members of Gen XMZ gather. Sometimes we share important information about upcoming events, discuss church politics, and remind folks to participate in critical church activities like our annual meeting. And sometimes we are sharing memes and celebrating each other’s day to day wins.

In general, Gen XMZ is a space for both young adults and not-so young adults to enjoy community here at First Unitarian Church. We help each other bring our ideas to life whether that be going to local events with friends, building deeper connections with regular small group meetings, or just hanging out together. The group is always open to new ideas!
