As Unitarian Universalists, we value pluralism and transformation. This means we value bringing people from different backgrounds and experiences together to collectively transform and grow. What better way to give ourselves the opportunity for transformation than a collaborative role playing game like Dungeons and Dragons!
For some time, our children’s education program, currently run by the DREAM team, has regularly featured Dungeons and Dragons. This very popular programming brings in kids from both inside and beyond our church community. But, until recently there was no structured way for adults to get in on the game!
So, our Gen XMZ group, who focus on building community with folks who are Generation X, Millennials, and adult members of Gen Z, decided to launch and Dungeons and Dragons campaign! Our goal was to find ways to be creative while having fun together. And we discovered there are lots of folks in our community who want to do the same!
We started off running a demo to help folks get to know the game better. We all played as human fighters, took out a couple of goblins, and explored an ancient civilization’s remnants.
We came together to build our characters the following Sunday, and then agreed to meet up regularly Thursday evenings. One of the wonderful challenges we’ve had with our D&D group is we have a lot of folks who want to play! We are very lucky to have several folks who are willing to be dungeon master for us.
At our most recent meeting, on August 15, we had a very large group of folks come to play together! Our two dungeon masters stepped up to the plate and we divided the group into two different campaigns, one run by Ben Barwick and the other run by Stuart Mayfield!
Both campaigns will continue to meet on Thursday nights at 6pm in the church. Since we had such a good turnout, we have decided to close those groups. That means if you have not yet played with us then you will need to contact Dr. Louise, the leader of Gen XMZ, jerlouwillcox@gmail.com to find out when your next opportunity to join is.
However, since so many folks at First Unitarian seem interested in D&D our Dungeon Masters have agreed to regularly host stand-alone one shot campaigns after Sunday Service to give folks new to the game a taste of what it is like. See the church calendar for the next scheduled one-shot. People who want to continue playing D&D based on their one-shot experience will be given guidance on creating a character and be incorporated into our regularly meeting campaigns as soon as possible.
